South Asians struggling with mental illness are one of the most underserved communities in mental health. Cultural stigma and shame surrounding mental illness, combined with a lack of culturally-responsive mental health services deter people from seeking help.
This award-winning documentary and panel discussion offers valuable insights into the unique struggles and strengths of people struggling with mental health issues within the Indian and South Asian community, and offers tips on how to better engage them in the treatment and recovery process.

About the Documentary
Schizophrenia. It may be one word, but it immediately conjures up multiple connotations … Mad. Incurable. Violent. Suicidal. Chemical imbalances. Crazy. A lifelong condition. Inevitable dependency on Medicines. Dark. Terrible.
A Drop of Sunshine challenges these notions and the mainstream view as well as seeking alternate methods of recovery.
The film takes us through the personal story of Reshma Valliappan, a 30-year old Indian woman. It shares her journey to recovery and eventual triumph over her struggles. The film proposes that the only treatment method that can work in Schizophrenia is one where the so-called ‘patient’ is encouraged and empowered to become an equal partner in the process of healing. Directed by Aparna Sanyal.
